Chair’s Corner

On behalf of the IEEE Electron Device Society Vacuum Electronics Technical Committee, I would like to welcome you to the website.

Vacuum electronics, with its century-long legacy, remains a critical technology, enabling high power in microwave, millimeter wave, and even THz frequency regimes. The discipline’s multidisciplinary nature continues to captivate the brightest minds globally, promising innovative breakthroughs that will drive its evolution.

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, our committee’s mission is to further foster global collaboration in this vital field. I believe that strengthening ties between researchers, industries, and institutions across different regions is crucial for accelerating progress and addressing the challenges of the future. We are fortunate to be part of a global community where diverse perspectives and shared knowledge can spark new ideas and innovations.

Brad W. Hoff

2026 John R. Pierce Award for Excellence in Vacuum Electronics

Brad W. Hoff is the Senior Scientist for High Power Electromagnetics at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A. He serves as the principal scientific authority and independent researcher in the sciences and technologies associated with high power electromagnetics and their application to Air Force mission areas.

After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2009, Brad Hoff began his career with the Air Force as a research physicist at the AFRL Directed Energy Directorate, Albuquerque, NM. Throughout his career, he has led efforts to identify and understand key science challenges in high power electromagnetic (HPEM) directed energy (DE) technology development areas, worked within the basic and applied research communities to create and prove novel concepts to solve these challenges, and rapidly matured and implemented solutions to enable demonstration of next generation HPEM systems. Dr. Hoff, a recipient of AFRL’s Fellow and S&T Early Career Awards, and a Fellow of the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has published over 70 refereed technical journal articles, 11 U.S. patents, and numerous DoD technical reports on science and inventions spanning multiple technical fields. Dr. Hoff has been the recipient of over 34 U.S. Department of the Air Force (DAF) and professional technical society awards for outstanding research and technical leadership contributions as well as for his service in multiple technical society committee and conference leadership roles.

For research contributions to beam-driven high power microwave source science and technology and technical leadership in the field of high-power electromagnetics.

Learn More About IVEC

Since its inception in 2000, the International Vacuum Electronics Conference has become the premier international venue for presentations in the field of vacuum electronics. It was born by merging the US Power Tubes Conferences and the European Space Agency TWTA Workshops.

IVEC meets in the U.S. every two years in Monterey, which has become the US home of IVEC and in Europe and Asia alternately every fourth year.
